Ironically the film is set in the west, where Western films have often been one of the most masculine types of movies. This leads to Jack getting into an intense argument with his father-in-law, when he questions Jack’s parenting skills. ![]() For example Ennis beats up a man because the man says that Ennis is not getting sex from his wife. Jack’s masculinity is also questioned by his father-in-law because his wife is the primary breadwinner. Over time homosexual men have often been attacked with slurs like “fruit cake” and “fairy.” Both Jack and Ennis in the film feel the need to prove the masculinity in different ways, even though their same-sex encounter is not known to the other characters. The film itself does not touch on LGBT issues that were extremely relevant after the AIDS epidemic, but it accurately portrayed the closeted lifestyle that many LGBT people had to undergo pre-1980s.Still the film was “criticized” as being too straight, and it didn’t help matters no one of the LGBT community were highly involved in the film.Īnother thing that the film manages to address is the masculinity of gay people. Many people who screened the film did not know it was a gay romance film and thought it was a western. While that is true it also led to the film having more success at the box-office. Yet the film got criticized because during the press tour Lee, Ledger, and Gyllenhaal all avoided using the word “gay.” The film got criticized for this marketing move, saying it did not represent the LGBT community at all. The movie poster was even styled off of the Titanic (1997) poster, which affirmed it was a gay romance story. This film was marketed as a romance-western film, and did not mention LGBT issues. Ennis is heartbroken, but continues to cherish the memories he had with Jack on Brokeback Mountain. Years later Jack unexpectedly dies, leaving behind his bitter wife Lureen (Anne Hathaway) and their son. Complications arise where Ennis’ wife Alma (Michelle Williams) finds out about his affair with Jack, and she eventually divorces him. They meet up again, years later and continue their affair for some time in secret. After their affair on Bokeback Mountain, both characters marry and start a family. The two men, Ennis del Mar (Heath Ledger) and Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal), don’t identify as gay, as it was taboo during that time.
